I enjoyed reading the article in the latest AR about the gravity hills in California and the debate about whether they were optical illusions. Several years ago I made a trip to Quebec and Montreal; the driver of the tour bus made a big deal about this paved, steep hill we were about to go up; he stop the bus halfway up the hill, shut off the motor, took his foot off the brake, and the bus crept up the hill by itself. This was a steep hilll, paved, in an urban area, so there was no question about it being an optical illusion. I can't remember for sure now whether this was in Montreal or Quebec City, but I suspect it was in Montreal. Perhaps Mr dennett might want to check it out, if he doesn't already know about it.
